Friday Night Old-School Slow Jams on The Greenwood Beat – WFPG: A Musical Journey Back in Time

When the weather is just right and the weekend is about to begin, there’s something special about finding the perfect songs to set the mood. That’s where Dr. Angela K. Chambers, CEO of The Greenwood BeatWFPG and host of the “Friday Night Old-School Slow Jams” on The Greenwood Beat – WFPG, comes in.

Every Friday from 10:00 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. CST, Dr. Chambers takes listeners on a nostalgic journey through the tunes that have stood the test of time. It’s the kind of show that brings joy and a sense of comfort, without even having to leave the house or go out to a crowded club.

As Dr. Chambers explains, “There’s something magical about hearing those songs you haven’t heard in a while. It’s like rediscovering a part of yourself, reminiscing about old times, and simply enjoying the music.” And that’s exactly what The Greenwood Beat delivers.

Launched on June 8, 2023, The Greenwood Beat has quickly become a refreshing presence in the world of radio. While many stations stick to the ordinary, playing music from selected genres, The Greenwood Beat is breaking the mold. They are inspiring, encouraging, and uplifting, all while jamming to the old-school beats that never fail to get your head nodding and your heart singing.

But The Greenwood Beat isn’t just about the Friday Night Old-School Slow Jams. The station offers a variety of other shows and platforms that cater to different interests and community needs. One of these is the “Refocus and Informed” radio talk show, where Dr. Chambers and Dr. Francetta L. Mays, the COO of The Greenwood Beat, discuss a range of topics. In the second season of the show and the first season on WFPG, they focused on justice. However, in the upcoming season 3, they will be diving into the theme of black love.

Another exciting addition to the lineup is “The New Artist Profile,” hosted by the world-renowned radio host Tony D. This show premiered on Sunday, June 21st, and aims to shine a spotlight on talented up-and-coming artists, giving them a platform to share their music and stories with a wider audience.

But it’s not all about music and talk shows on The Greenwood Beat. They also understand the importance of literacy and community engagement. That’s why they have a unique segment called “Let’s READ,” where volunteers take turns reading to school-aged children on air. By using their platform to promote reading, WFPG is making a positive impact on the community and encouraging a love for books.

So, if you’re looking for a way to kick back, relax, and start your weekend on a high note, tune in to the Friday Night Old-School Slow Jams on The Greenwood Beat – WFPG. Dr. Chambers will be your guide on this musical journey back in time, bringing you the songs that will make you smile, reminisce, and maybe even dance a little.

Help the Children by Being a Resource

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s important to remember that our children are the future. They need our support and guidance to help them focus, perform, and learn. As a community, we have the power to make a difference in their lives. So, let’s come together and be a resource for our children.

One way you can help is by starting with your tribe. Are there parents in your community who are struggling to transport their children to and from school? Offering to help with transportation on some days can make a big difference in their lives. It may seem like a small gesture, but it can have a huge impact on a child’s ability to attend school regularly and be engaged in their education.

Another way to support our children is by creating a home learning environment. Young parents often face challenges in managing their homes while trying to provide a conducive learning environment for their children. If you have any tips or tools that can help them manage their homes more efficiently, share them. Sometimes, a simple suggestion can make a world of difference.

If you have some free time, consider volunteering to read books on air at The Greenwood BeatWFPG or in a local reading program. Reading is a fundamental skill that lays the foundation for a child’s education. By volunteering your time, you can help instill a love for reading and learning in young minds. It’s a rewarding experience that benefits both you and the children.

For those who have a passion for education, consider getting involved with the PTA or PTSA organizations in your local schools. These organizations play a vital role in supporting the needs of students and teachers. By joining them, you can contribute to the improvement of your community’s education system.

Let’s not forget about the importance of sharing information. Many parents may not be aware of the free or low-cost services available in the community that can benefit their children. By sharing this information, you can help parents access the resources they need to support their child’s education. Whether it’s tutoring programs, after-school activities, or mentoring opportunities, every little bit helps.

If you have school-aged children in your family, take a moment to assess if there are any needs that you can assist with. It could be as simple as helping with homework or providing a quiet space for studying. By offering your support, you can make a positive impact on their educational journey.

It’s clear that our school system in Tulsa has been failing for over 30 years. But together, we can start to turn things around. The Greenwood Beat – WFPG is calling on all leaders, college and high school students, church leaders, pastors, retired teachers, and other organizations to volunteer to read online. The reading program is aimed at children aged 0 to 8 years old, and it broadcasts every Saturday from noon Central Standard Time.

The Let’s READ initiative kicked off on January 6th with author and educator Mr. Troy J. Petit Sr. He interviewed with Dr. Angela K. Chambers, CEO of The Greenwood Beat – WFPG, and read from his book, “Hugs of Love, on air. Mr. Pettit shared his passion for writing the book and why it’s important to instill a sense of love and compassion in children. Author Esther Jones has also joined the cause and is working tirelessly to spread the word.

If you’re interested in volunteering for the Let’s READ program, simply email us at read@thegreenwoodbeat.com. Your contribution, no matter how small, can make a significant impact on a child’s life. Together, let’s be a resource for our children and help them thrive in their education.

The Importance of a Petition to Stop Taxing the Historic Greenwood Chamber of Commerce

When it comes to the historic Greenwood District in Tulsa, Oklahoma, there are conflicting views on its significance and preservation. Some see it as a cherished part of history, a legacy that deserves honor and protection. Others, however, view it as a mere opportunity for greed to exploit and profit from, neglecting the historical and cultural value it holds.

Despite the attention garnered by celebrities, politicians, and media companies in promoting the story of The Original Black Wall Street, it seems that little effort or resources have been dedicated to assisting the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce in preserving the area. The talk of preservation often appears to be nothing more than a soundbite, lacking real action and commitment.

The Greenwood Chamber has been tirelessly fighting to maintain the last remaining properties in the district, all while burdened with taxes such as stadium taxes for land that was sold by previous board members to build a stadium. The imposition of such taxes appears unjust and burdensome.

Adding insult to injury, the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce has been denied federal ARPA funding, while funds have been approved for other organizations. This discrepancy raises questions about fairness and the true commitment of the city to honor and preserve the area’s history.

It is time for a change. The taxing of the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce must be stopped, and what has been taken should be returned. The taxes collected on the land that was sold should not only be ceased but also reimbursed to the Chamber with interest.

The City of Tulsa needs to step up and demonstrate a genuine dedication to preserving the area, its history, and its future. While the real estate in the district may be prime, it is not up for sale to those who seek to profit at the expense of its legacy. This includes individuals like Jay Morrison, a supposed “Real Estate Investor” who was brought in to purchase the last remaining buildings owned by the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce.  https://www.youtube.com/live/ggcGCjGYGRQ?si=7aABn0Az4VemG-rN

Morrison’s involvement with the Tulsa Real Estate Fund, which has since been exposed, raises further concerns about the motives behind these transactions.

Instead of perpetuating division and exploitation, it is time for us to come together and unite. We must work towards preserving the Greenwood District, not only for the sake of its historical importance but also for the future generations who deserve to experience and learn from its legacy.

Minister Alvin Muhammad has taken a stand by signing the petition on Change.org, and it is crucial that others join in support.

By signing the petition, we can send a powerful message to the City of Tulsa that the taxing of the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce is unacceptable and that preserving this historic district should be a top priority.

Together, we can make a difference and ensure that the Greenwood District remains a symbol of resilience, heritage, and progress for years to come.

Pastor Tim Newton with Tulsa Dream Center Helps the Community with Shelter

Winter storms can be brutal, especially when temperatures drop to single digits. But amidst the freezing cold, there are unsung heroes who go above and beyond to ensure the safety and well-being of their community. One such hero is Pastor Tim Newton of Tulsa Dream Center.

The Tulsa Dream Center, under the guidance of Pastor Tim Newton, has been a beacon of hope and support for the people of Tulsa. Known for their dedication to serving families and children through various services, events, and opportunities, such as food giveaways and back-to-school drives, the Dream Center is now stepping up to provide shelter during this harsh winter weather.

As the weatherman predicts negative temperatures for the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, the annual MLK parade has sadly been canceled. However, amidst the disappointment, there is a silver lining. Pastor Tim Newton and his staff at the Dream Center have opened their facilities as warming stations for those without adequate heating.

This selfless act of kindness not only showcases Pastor Tim Newton’s commitment to the community but also highlights the importance of coming together during challenging times. The Dream Center’s decision to provide shelter is a testament to their unwavering dedication to helping those in need.

On behalf of The Greenwood BeatWFPG, we would like to extend a heartfelt “Thank you” to Pastor Tim Newton and his staff at the Tulsa Dream Center and recognize him as our Community HERO Highlight. Their efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of the community during this winter storm are truly commendable. It is through acts like these that the spirit of unity and compassion thrives.

In addition to the Dream Center, there are other warming stations available around Tulsa for those in need. It is crucial to spread awareness about these resources so that everyone can find shelter and stay safe during these harsh weather conditions. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by the winter storm.

As we navigate through these challenging times, it is essential to remember the power of community and the impact we can have when we come together. Pastor Tim Newton and the Tulsa Dream Center exemplify the true meaning of compassion and service, reminding us all of the importance of lending a helping hand to those in need.

So, if you or someone you know is in need of shelter during this winter storm, please reach out to the Tulsa Dream Center or explore other available warming stations in the area. Let’s stand together and support one another, for it is in unity that we find strength and resilience.

Stay safe, stay warm, and remember that even in the coldest of times, there are warm hearts ready to embrace and protect those in need.

Note: It is important to follow the instructions provided by local authorities and organizations regarding shelter and safety during severe weather conditions.
