“Voices of Resilience: The Legacy of Black Newspapers in Oklahoma”

Oklahoma’s Black press has long served as more than a source of local news—it has been a bastion of resilient storytelling, truth-telling, and advocacy for Black communities across the state.

Early Rise and Assertion of Rights
The lineage of Black journalism in Oklahoma began with pioneering efforts like the Oklahoma Guide (1889) and the Langston City Herald (1891), which provided platforms for self-determination in emerging all-Black towns okcrotary.club+15okhistory.org+15localmedia.org+15 During the early 20th century, Black newspapers filled critical gaps left by mainstream media that either ignored or misrepresented Black lives.

Guardians of History and Justice
Publications such as The Black Dispatch (founded by Roscoe Dunjee in 1915) and the Oklahoma Eagle (established post-Tulsa Race Massacre in 1922) became key voices in documenting injustice and uplifting community heroes blogs.loc.gov+15en.wikipedia.org+15en.wikipedia.org+15  These papers chronicled everything from everyday lives to the horrors of lynching and racially motivated violence—truths that white-owned papers largely ignored.

Family-Owned, Community-Rooted
For decades, Black newspapers like the Oklahoma Eagle and The Black Chronicle in Oklahoma City remained family-owned — with the Goodwin and Perry families, respectively, maintaining their legacy across generations storage.googleapis.com+15localmedia.org+15en.wikipedia.org+15  Their endurance shows a deep link to local identity, cultural memory, and economic empowerment.

Modern Survivors and Digital Advocates
Today, outlets such as The Trumpet on Greenwood (founded 2023) and programs like Focus: Black Oklahoma fill vital media niches with contemporary perspectives on equity, accountability, and cultural pride in Tulsa and statewide, facebook.com/trumpetongreenwood

Why It Matters:

  • Historical documentation & civic memory: These outlets preserved the full story of Greenwood, Tulsa’s Black Wall Street, even after the massacre and mainstream censorship en.wikipedia.org+4investopedia.com+4newyorker.com+4.

  • Community advocacy: Black media has addressed systemic inequalities—from segregation to modern-day school issues and public health disparities.

  • Self-representation: By telling their own stories, Black journalists reclaimed dignity and agency during periods of exclusion and misrepresentation.

We are officially entering YEAR 3 of broadcasting, storytelling, truth-telling, and beat-making.

Founded by Dr. Angela K. Chambers, Ph.D., The Greenwood Beat – WFPG was created to reclaim the mic for Greenwood and amplify voices too often left out of mainstream media. Since launching, the station has grown into a vibrant platform for music, news, culture, commentary, and community. We have hosted authors, business owners, activists, youth leaders, and entertainers — all while preserving the legacy of the Greenwood District and pushing forward a new era of Black media power.

We didn’t just start a radio station. We started a movement,” says Dr. Angela K. Chambers. “From the moment we went live, our goal was to honor the past, impact the present, and build the future — one beat at a time.”

Throughout the past two years, The Greenwood Beat has:

Launched hit shows like Ask Angela, HopeHop Multimedia Podcast, Talkin Wit Trus, and Trumpet on Greenwood

Partnered with local and national creatives, including Black-owned businesses, artists, and authors

Led initiatives like The Black Wall Street Shopping Network, Greenwood Literary Voices, and the upcoming No Violence in America campaign

Provided virtual business addresses for entrepreneurs to operate from the heart of Black Wall Street

Held strong in defending the legacy and physical presence of the historic Greenwood Business District

And now, with Year 3 underway, we’re raising the bar even higher.

We’re investing in:

  • Expanded programming and syndication opportunities
  • Youth and intergenerational media education
  • National content partnerships
  • More shows, events, campaigns, and resources to uplift the culture and community

Rebuilding Black Wall Street One Beat at a Time

The Greenwood Beat – WFPG

Historic Greenwood Avenue, Tulsa, Oklahoma

Why Black Media Matters: The Power of Our Voice, Our Stories, Our Legacy

In an era dominated by fast news, digital influencers, and corporate-owned media outlets, Black media remains a critical force in preserving truth, culture, and representation. It’s more than just storytelling — it’s legacy-building, truth-telling, and community-saving. For generations, Black media has served as the trusted voice of our people, documenting our struggles, triumphs, and transformation.

At The Greenwood Beat – WFPG, located on the historic Greenwood Avenue in Tulsa, Oklahoma — also known as the original Black Wall Street — we are proud torchbearers of this powerful legacy.

1. Black Media Tells the Stories Mainstream Media Won’t

Black media doesn’t wait for permission to speak. We highlight the lived experiences of Black communities — our joys, our pain, our excellence. Whether it’s telling the truth about underreported issues, celebrating our entrepreneurs, or demanding justice, Black media ensures our stories are seen and heard uncensored and unapologetically.

2. Representation Matters

When we see ourselves in media, it builds confidence, restores cultural pride, and disrupts harmful stereotypes. Black-owned media creates space where we are not tokens or side characters, but leaders, visionaries, artists, activists, and experts.

3. We Control Our Narrative

From the Tulsa Race Massacre in 1921 to modern-day movements for justice, controlling the narrative is essential. Black media platforms like The Greenwood Beat amplify Black excellence, thought leadership, and community voices in ways that mainstream outlets simply cannot or will not.

4. Economic Empowerment

Black media provides opportunities for Black creatives, journalists, producers, entrepreneurs, and advertisers to thrive. Every dollar spent advertising with or subscribing to Black-owned outlets circulates within our community and helps build generational wealth.

5. Cultural Preservation

From gospel music and hip-hop to politics and poetry, Black media archives our culture in real time. It serves as a living museum of Black thought, sound, innovation, and movement. On The Greenwood Beat, we’re not just playing music — we’re preserving heritage.

6. Building a Safer, Informed, and Empowered Community

When we’re informed, we’re empowered. When we’re empowered, we take action. Black media delivers the news and resources that save lives, inspire dreams, and ignite change — from voter education and public health to financial literacy and spiritual encouragement.

The Greenwood Beat – WFPG: Rebuilding Black Wall Street, One Beat at a Time

Our commitment is bold and unwavering. As Oklahoma’s first woman-owned and first-ever radio station on historic Greenwood Avenue, The Greenwood Beat – WFPG is reclaiming space, amplifying voices, and setting a new standard for Black excellence in media.

We invite our community, allies, advertisers, and visionaries to stand with us.
