New Series by The Greenwood Beat – WFPG: “Coping Skills for Kids & Teens” Helping Our Youth Choose Peace Over Violence

In today’s world, children and teens are being exposed to violence at younger ages than ever before. Some grow up in environments where fighting is second nature—and sadly, many don’t have the coping tools they need to break the cycle.

At The Greenwood Beat – WFPG, we believe it’s time to change the message.

We’re proud to introduce our new “Coping Skills for Kids & Teens” poster series—simple, impactful tools to help young people:

  • Identify their feelings
  • Calm themselves down
  • Express emotions in healthy ways
  • Ask for help when needed
  • Replace violence with peace and self-control

Too often we hear the phrase, “kids don’t fight like we used to.”

The truth is—they shouldn’t have to fight at all.

  • Fighting is not a rite of passage.
  • It’s not a solution.
  • It’s violence.

We’ve come too far as a society to believe that physical harm is how we handle conflict. If words can’t bring peace, then we teach kids to walk away. If they can’t walk away, we intervene. No child deserves to be hit. No child should have to fear their peers.

This series is designed for:

  • Classrooms
  • Youth organizations
  • Churches
  • Parents and caregivers
  • Counselors and mentors

Let’s push a better message: Teach peace. Teach coping. Teach love.

Together, we can build a future where our children feel safe enough to choose peace.

The Greenwood Beat – WFPG Announces New Community Mental Health Partnerships and Launch of Grief & Trauma Support Services

Tulsa, OK – June 26, 2025 — In a powerful move to uplift and care for the community in the face of recent tragedy and ongoing trauma, The Greenwood Beat – WFPG, Oklahoma’s first and only Black woman-owned radio station on historic Greenwood Avenue, is proud to announce its newly secured partnerships with Family & Children’s Services and Grand Mental Health to provide counseling and Grief & Trauma Support Services to the Greenwood community.

This vital partnership was made possible through the leadership of Starr Fisher, Chief Operating Officer of The Greenwood Beat – WFPG, who has been working diligently behind the scenes to ensure that resources, support, and professional services are brought directly to the people of Greenwood. The trauma and grief that continues to touch the community — especially our youth — demands more than conversation; it calls for compassionate action, and that is exactly what this partnership delivers.

Tonight, Thursday, June 26, at 6:00 PM, we invite the community to gather at 104 N. Greenwood Avenue — the home of The Greenwood Beat – WFPG — as we host a Community Open Mic Night, giving individuals the opportunity to express themselves, be heard, and begin the healing process. Whether through spoken word, testimony, prayer, or honest conversation, this is a safe space to let your voice be heard. Guests may also call in live to join the conversation on-air.

“It’s okay to ask for help,” said Dr. Angela K. Chambers, Founder and CEO of The Greenwood Beat – WFPG. “Tonight is about healing. It’s about being real. And it’s about knowing that you don’t have to carry this alone. We’re building something new — one beat at a time — and that includes healing our people.”

The Grief & Trauma Support Service will be offered in collaboration with licensed professionals from Family & Children’s Services and Grand Mental Health, who will be present on-site and available for follow-up services.

As The Greenwood Beat – WFPG continues to grow its reach across the airwaves, it remains deeply committed to the community it serves. More than a radio station, it is a platform for truth, healing, and action — restoring the heartbeat of Black Wall Street and amplifying the voices too often left unheard.

Greenwood Press Conference Sparks Urgent Call for Unity, Healing, and Action After Juneteenth Tragedy

By The Greenwood Beat – WFPG

June 25, 2025 – Tulsa, OK

Yesterday, the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with the Deep Greenwood Foundation, community advocates, media representatives, and the grieving family of 22-year-old Isaiah Knight—who was tragically murdered on Juneteenth on historic Greenwood Avenue—gathered for a powerful press conference calling for unity, healing, and real change in Tulsa.

Held on the sacred grounds of historic Greenwood, Dr. Freeman Culver, President of the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce, delivered a firm message of hope and collaboration.

“We’re not here to assign blame. We’re here to say it’s time—time for all of us to work together for the good of the community,” said Dr. Culver. “We will have closed-door meetings with leaders, councilors, and the mayor, and then come back to the community with real solutions.”

Heather Nash of the Deep Greenwood Foundation spoke about protecting the legacy of Greenwood and investing in its future, emphasizing the need to meet pain with purpose.

Community leader Terry Baccus addressed the importance of public safety and perception:

“We must stand united as a community and assure both residents and tourists that Tulsa—and specifically, the historic Greenwood District—is a safe and welcoming place.”

Well-known community advocate Angie Pitts spoke directly to the role adults play in shaping young lives:

“We need to start telling our young people the truth and show them love. They are hungry for guidance, and we have to meet them with truth, not just talk.”

Adding to the urgency of community-wide protection, Officer Mark Jeans, owner of TriArms Security Solutions and longtime protector of Greenwood Chamber events, shared critical insight on safety planning:

“There are key safety measures that should always be taken when organizing large events like Juneteenth. I’m willing to work with organizers to ensure detailed plans and adequate safety protocols are in place for future events,” Jeans stated. His remarks were met with support from attendees who agree that safety must be proactive, not reactive.

As the press conference turned into a deeper community discussion, residents asked vital questions:

“What’s the next step?”

“What support is being offered to parents and families?”

One attendee made an emotional plea:

“We can offer services for our kids, but if they’re going back to homes where trauma and dysfunction are the norm, we’re not fixing the root. We must support the parents, too.”

Dr. Culver announced that the next leadership and strategy meeting will take place on

An Open Letter to the Mayor and Tulsa City Council:

From the Desk of Angela K. Chambers, Ph.D.

An Open Letter to the Mayor and Tulsa City Council:

Dear Mayor Monroe Nichols and Esteemed Members of the Tulsa City Council,

As a longtime Tulsan, a community advocate, and a concerned citizen, I am writing to express my urgent appeal for the proposed teen curfew to be expanded to cover the entire city of Tulsa — not just the downtown area.

While I understand and respect the desire to protect our historic and economically vital downtown district, I ask: What about our neighborhoods? What about the homes where families sleep, where children are raised, and where so many are already living in fear due to increasing gun violence?

By only enforcing a curfew downtown, we create an unsafe shift — pushing potential issues into residential communities while leaving families, elders, and vulnerable individuals exposed. A citywide curfew is not only just — it is necessary for the times we are living in. We must send a unified message that all of Tulsa matters, not just selected ZIP codes or entertainment zones.

Furthermore, we must remember that curfews are not about punishment — they are about protection. A citywide curfew can shield our teens from dangerous situations and from adults who may prey upon their youth, immaturity, or need for belonging.

Additionally, I ask that part of the two million dollars in recent grant funding be directed toward cracking down on the pipeline of illegal and irresponsible gun access among our youth. We cannot ignore the conversations held directly with teens, who are bravely speaking out. The availability of firearms — whether purchased illegally or through adult proxies — is fueling a cycle of tragedy that affects every corner of our city. Every gun seized from a minor should be traced. We must stop the supply chain if we are serious about saving lives.

We have already witnessed the aftermath of shootings in the days surrounding Juneteenth and since. We must act now, not react later. Let us make a decision that protects all of Tulsa — equitably, decisively, and boldly.

I call on our elected officials to adopt a citywide teen curfew and to invest in the accountability and safety systems needed to back it up.

I also encourage fellow citizens to make your voices heard. Contact the Mayor and your City Council representative. Attend council meetings. Share your thoughts publicly and respectfully.

Together, we can build a Tulsa that honors every resident’s right to safety — no matter their age, neighborhood, or background.

With sincere hope for unity and progress,
Dr. Angela K. Chambers
