David Thomas Declares “Black is Beautiful” at The Greenwood Beat – WFPG’s Juneteenth Poetry Showcase
Tulsa, OK — The Juneteenth Poetry Showcase on The Greenwood Beat – WFPG is filled with powerful voices—and among them stands Tulsa-based poet David Thomas, delivering his passionate piece titled “Black is Beautiful.”
Born in Detroit, Michigan, David’s journey as a creative has traveled just as much as he has. After moving frequently during his childhood, he and his family made Tulsa, Oklahoma home in 2001. It was during his high school years that he began writing—a passion that would eventually evolve into a profound gift for spoken word poetry.
David’s early performances began not on a big stage, but in a space filled with faith. In 2014, he stepped onto the mic for the first time in a church setting, just before heading off to Oklahoma State University. There, his love for spoken word grew stronger as he participated in poetry slams and live performance events, refining his voice and message through community and creativity.
After graduating from OSU in 2019, David returned home to Tulsa and continued his pursuit of purpose through poetry. From open mic nights to city showcases, he’s remained committed to honing his craft and making sure his words echo loudly in spaces that matter.
